Evolution & Challenges for TETRA

TETRA network virtualisation

The concept of network virtualisation which is typical of 4G and even more so with 5G technologies can also be applied to TETRA infrastructure.

Such a network architecture evolution will allow the provision of TETRA communications services through core network software packages remotely installed on general purpose data centres rather than on dedicated hardware platforms. This gives advantages in terms of cost-effectiveness but also potential risks in terms of security. However under certain conditions, such a solution can allow a user organisation already equipped with data centre platforms to optimise its investments for the deployment of a TETRA network.

Several TETRA network manufacturers are working on such solutions that will also facilitate in the future the integration of TETRA technology within the multi-RAT 5G paradigma.
