TELTRONIC deploys Balearic Islands Public Safety and Emergency network, confirming its leadership in the Spanish TETRA market

TELTRONIC continues its success in Spain with the recent award of a new Public Safety and Emergency TETRA network for the Balearic Islands

TELTRONIC, together with SAMPOL, have been awarded the contract to build for the supply and installation of an emergency and security network to cover the Balearic Islands: Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera. The new emergency communications network based on TETRA technology is called TETRAib and will be run by the government-owned company, Multimedia Illes Balears S.A.U., dependent upon the Department of Technology and Communications of the Balearic Islands Government.

The implementation of the TETRAib communications network involves an investment of just over 4 million euros. 70% coverage will be achieved in June 2011 with almost complete territorial coverage in December 2011. The network is designed to handle in excess of 3,000 users from the full range of emergency services and local, island and autonomous government entities that will now share a common network allowing greater efficiency, coordination and functionality.

TELTRONICs TETRA network (NEBULA) will be made up of 36 base stations, covering the islands of Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera. It will operate in the emergency frequency band of 380-400 MHz, reaching over 95% geographical coverage. All base stations are being connected via TCP-IP; all critical network elements are being duplicated to guarantee continued service; encryption is available as well as the possibility of recording all voice communications.

TETRAib also gives its users access to a number of advanced services that TELTRONICs TETRA technology can offer. As well as the standard voice call capabilities group calls, individual calls, emergency call, full-duplex call etc. -, a wide range of data services are now possible over the TETRA network: GPS in mobile and hand-held radios, Virtual Private Network (VPN) functionality, dynamic groups and the possibility of interconnection with public networks and advanced network management and monitoring services.

On March 24th, the project was presented by the Balearic Island Governments Innovation, Interior & Justice Minister, Ms. Pilar Costa in the presence of some 200 people, including several media outlets.

According to Miguel Aladren, TELTRONICs Commercial Sub-director for Spain, TELTRONIC has a vast experience of delivering wide-area public safety networks such as TETRAib and we have consolidated our position as the main TETRA supplier in the Spanish market in recent years with a number of high-profile deployments in the Basque Country, Canary Islands and the Autonomous City of Ceuta to name but a few.

Our TETRA technology (NEBULA) based on Ethernet/IP has a flexible architecture which provides a scalable, expandable network design, with high levels of redundancy. As in Spain, we are the main supplier of TETRA in Latin America and the technology has been supplied to over 50 countries around the world.
