T.On Telecom replaces existing Trunked Radio System with Motorola’s TETRA solution
Operator deploys IP-based TETRA system to deliver better voice quality and data roaming capabilities for its users.
Seoul, Korea, November 4, 2005 T.On Telecom, a leading trunked radio network operator in Korea, has signed a contract to replace its existing trunking radio network with Motorola’s TETRA digital trunking radio system. This contract award also marks the first largest TETRA-based Public Access Mobile Radio network in Korea.
T.On Telecom needed to upgrade its current FHMA (Frequency Hopping Multiple Access) system to an advanced platform to better facilitate the daily communications and high usage of its customers in public transportation industry including taxi and freight forwarding companies, public utilities firms as well as emergency and rescue agencies.
“We need a reliable and long-term partner to provide us and our users with an efficient and secure mobile radio and data communications network. After careful assessment, Motorola was the choice partner because it has proven expertise and leadership in many large and significant turn-key communication projects,” said Mr. Sung-Joo Kim, CEO and president, T.On Telecom.
Motorola will implement its Dimetra IP-based digital radio system and infrastructure that covers a network of more than 56 sites within Seoul, Kyungki and Incheon area. The new network will also serve as a critical backbone for T.On Telecom’s major public transportation customer to better coordinate, dispatch resources and effectively track down the location of its fleets. Motorola’s scope also includes the provision of more than 20,000 units of 800MHz Motorola’s TETRA portable radios, a base station and main switching office, which marks this as the first and biggest TETRA-based network service provided by a telecommunication operator to a public transportation service provider.
“We are delighted to be able to extend our best practices and expertise in TETRA implementation. With the upgraded system, T.On Telecom will enjoy greater flexibility and scalability of an optimum network, backed by an IP-based TETRA system. They would also be able to deliver a more secure and seamless voice and data service and roaming capabilities for its customers, hence boosting operational efficiency and channels utilisation” said Choi Kun Sang, director of direct sales, Government & Enterprise Mobility Solutions business.
