Swedish Public Safety Network protected against eavesdropping

NOTE: TETRA is one of the most secure communications technologies in the world. This press release relates to a product designed for those specialist user groups who may require additional protection over and above this.

FMV, the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration, has placed an order for TETRA crypto from Sectra. The crypto solution will be used to protect calls from eavesdropping in Rakel, the Swedish Public Safety Network. Rakel is a new nationwide radio system used by public safety agencies such as the police, rescue services, customs, Coast Guard and the Defense Forces.
The TETRA crypto has been developed by Sectra in cooperation with Swedish authorities and will start being used in conjunction with Sweden’s current EU Presidency.

“Several authorities, such as the police, customs and Coast Guard, require reinforced protection against eavesdropping. The crypto we offer to Rakel users is easy to use and promotes secure and efficient cooperation within and between the various public safety agencies,” says Michael Bertilsson, President of Sectra Communications.
Sectra’s TETRA crypto protects calls from eavesdropping regardless of the terminal supplier. The crypto feature is integrated in a card similar to the SIM cards used in mobile phones and is inserted into terminals already used in Rakel. The TETRA crypto provides users with the freedom to choose a terminal based on their own specific needs while safeguarding the ability to communicate securely with all other users.
