Stockholm city transport opts for Sepura

Stockholms city transport authority has decided to use TETRA radio communications technology from Sepura to update the voice and data communications for its tram and light rail operations. This contract, which comprises around 1,000 radio units, highlights both the value that TETRA technology can bring to public transport operators and the high level of functionality that Sepura mobile radios offer.

The contract has been awarded by Storstockholms Lokaltrafik AB (SL), the public transport authority for the greater Stockholm area, to Swedish Radio Supply AB (SRSAB), Sepuras local partner in Sweden and involves the supply and installation of 250 units on trams and 750 units on trains, all serving the 1,100,000 people who use the Stockholm public transport network daily. The Sepura units will be used to transmit both voice and data traffic across SLs TETRA network. The data transmitted will consist primarily of Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) information, which will be used primarily to assist in dealing with any incidents or accidents.

SRSAB is not only supplying the Sepura terminals, but is providing SL with a complete packaged solution, by bringing together two Stockholm-based suppliers; TBT, which is responsible for installation and maintenance, and LS Electronics, which will undertake the mechanical and software design of the new T2 user interface panel. SRSAB was awarded the contract not only because of its ability to offer a complete, integrated solution backed up by excellent service, but also because of the robustness, high levels of functionality and ease of use offered by the Sepura SRG3900 mobile radios. Work on installations begins during May 2011 and is scheduled for completion by June 2012.

Commenting on this key contract, Johnny Dahlquist, CEO of SRSAB, said This project will securely deliver data which will help in all aspects of SLs operations, not the least of which is the improvement in customer service. We are already the leading supplier of terminals onto the nationwide RAKEL network with a significant number of military and emergency services customers using Sepura radios, and we are delighted that Swedish transport agencies are also now migrating to TETRA and Sepura.

Lars-Magnus Gustafsson, Sepuras Senior Business Development Manager for Scandinavia, added This contract is pleasing to win and is a testament to the hard work of our partners at SRSAB. Sepura terminals are being used in public transport projects around the world and, together with our solution partners, we can bring considerable experience to bear on the unique issues facing transport operators. One of these is the transmission of secure data, which TETRA is very much designed to deliver.
