Shanghai Metro Selects Motorola’s TETRA-based Digital Communications System for its current and future rail lines!

Reliability of the radio system, efficiency and safe operations were key factors in decision.

Shanghai, China, August 25, 2005 – Motorola (NYSE: MOT) announced that Shanghai Shentong (Group) Corporation and Motorola (China) Electronics have signed a 311 million RMB Yuan contract to implement Motorola’s TETRA digital trunking radio systems for Shanghai Metro’s growing network of 13 operating lines over a period of 10 years. This is the largest TETRA-based urban rail communications systems in China that will be equipped with two full backup MSOs (Mobile Switch Office), which will be used to control and manage the entire radio network.

After careful evaluation, we decided on Motorola’s dispatch communication system based on their proven track record in TETRA implementations for rail projects. Coupled with Motorola’s advanced technology, the new radio systems will enable information and communication to be dispatched in a more effective and secure manner during our daily operations,” said Zhu Husheng, Vice President of Shanghai Shentong Metro Co., Ltd.

Under this contract, Motorola will supply more than 110 units of well proven Enhanced Base Transceivers, two full backup Main Switch Offices, more than 5,000 user terminals, trainborne equipment, fix stations, as well as a complete RF distribution system which includes the leaky cable, fiber optical BDA, antenna system etc to run the extensive applications developed for Shanghai Metro, and turnkey service. The system will also be seamlessly integrated with the 800MHz digital TETRA-based emergency response system based at the Shanghai Public Security Bureau. The integration between both systems provides wider network coverage for the Shanghai city area and is especially useful for first responders in times of mission-critical situations and emergency operations.
