Power company boosts Sepura’s growth in Korea

Sepura has won a contract to supply TETRA digital radios to the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), the sole provider of electrical generation and distribution in South Korea as a public corporation.

KEPCO serves a population of nearly 49 million and has played a key role in the country’s rapidly expanding economy over the past decade. With more than 34,000 employees, it is one of Korea’s most profitable companies.

Cutting-edge technology is centric to KEPCO’s operations, and Sepura will add to this by providing secure and instant communications in managing power generation and the supply to homes and businesses.

Linked to the Korean National Emergency Management Agency’s government network, the radios will also enable communication with other utilities and emergency services in situations such as any power breakdown, fire or accident.

The contract to supply SRH3800 sGPS™ handheld radios and SRM3500 vehicle and fixed radios was secured by Promocom, Sepura’s distributor in Korea. The order strengthens Sepura’s market share in a country where users include police in the main cities of Seoul, Incheon, Kwangjoo and Daejeon, and the Navy police and National Emergency Management Agency.

Sepura’s GPS technology will enable the control centre to instantly locate personnel and vehicles. The radios also have a Korean language keypad and user interface. A further advantage is Radio Manager, Sepura’s market leading fleet management solution, which was also supplied to automatically configure groups of radios. This reduces the logistical challenge of maintaining a fleet of TETRA radios, saving time and money on software and configuration updates and audits.

Soo-Bok Lee, President of Promocom, says: “The first-class performance of Sepura commended by other agencies in Korea led to KEPCO joining our list of customers. They were also impressed by the robust quality of the radios, the competitive price and customer support.”

Kevin Graham, Regional Director for Sepura, added: “This order is significant in that it is the first major utility company in Asia to choose Sepura. Indeed, it’s an indication that Sepura and TETRA is spreading beyond that of supplying emergency services.”
