Motorola IP TETRA Network to Power Endesa’s Telemetry Solution in Spain’s Catalonia Region
Endesa to use Motorola’s IP TETRA network to automatically transmit data for electricity distribution monitoring
MADRID, Spain – TETRA WORLD CONGRESS – 13 June 2007 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced it has been chosen to supply a TETRA communications network for Endesa, a leading Spanish utility company. The network will be operational before the end of 2007 and could be expanded into other geographical areas.
Endesa manages a power distribution network spanning 100,000 km of high voltage power lines and Motorola’s Dimetra IP Compact system will support the automatic detection and prediction of power disruptions in Spain’s Catalonia region. The supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) remote monitoring system supported by the Motorola TETRA network is critical to ensuring ongoing electricity service.
Endesa is the most important utility in Spain and South America and has the best solutions in order to telecontrol the network, introducing very innovative devices in a new concept to achieve a real intelligent grid.
Working together with Amper Sistemas, Endesa reviewed many solutions and TETRA was selected as it offered the best availability, security and future-proofing for Endesa’s machine-to-machine communications.
Manuel Torres, vice president, Motorola Networks & Enterprise EMEA, says: “The Dimetra IP solution will enable Endesa to provide effective data transmission for the huge telemetry network already in place. Endesa is clearly at the forefront of telemetry usage in the utility market.”
Driving the decision was the need for a spectrally efficient standard, with resilient redundancy and fallback operation as well as a proven track record in deployed solutions. In addition the data capability of TETRA supports the real-time monitoring of Endesa’s distribution network, which enables the company to adopt the latest IEC protocols for telemetry.
The Motorola TETRA system replaces an analogue PMR network operating in radio spectrum reserved for utilities; a solution that was deemed unable to meet current and future needs. The existing solution also requires separate radio bases for voice and data, whereas Motorola’s Dimetra IP Compact TETRA delivers an integrated voice and data network.
The advanced TETRA system will deliver Endesa a resilient, robust and reliable network for the transmission of telemetry data and voice services to maintain communication with field service workers. Motorola’s Dimetra IP solutions are already widely used for telemetry applications, for example with both the Guadiana and Ebro River regional authorities.
