Malaysian airports embrace TETRA

In July 2012, 3T Communications AG (3T) and Sepura in collaboration with the Prime Contractor, Comintel Sdn Bhd, were awarded the contract for the supply of a complete TETRA system covering four Malaysian International airports – Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu. The combined expertise of Sepura and 3T to deliver an end-to-end critical communications solution is a major factor in securing the project with Malaysian Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), and reinforces the rationale behind Sepura’s strategic acquisition of 3T.

Comintel, specialist IT and telecoms systems integrator, will implement the solution which includes one 3T eXTRAS TETRA system for each location and a total of over 1,000 market-leading Sepura radio terminals with built-in GPS technology. The combination of 3T’s infrastructure with Sepura’s high-performance STP8000 hand-held terminals and powerful SRG3900 mobile radios will guarantee consistent, highly reliable voice and data communications within this challenging environment. Greater efficiencies will be achieved through the ability to manage centrally all of the airport’s resources.

Dato’ Abd Hamid Mohd Ali, Chief Operating Officer at Malaysian Airports Holdings Berhad, said “We were really impressed with the technical know-how, specialist expertise and extensive experience of all the companies involved in the solution, we are confident that from conception, installation and commissioning, to support and expansion, the solution will deliver exactly what we need and allow us to focus on running our aviation operations with complete peace-of-mind.”

“Airports are fast moving, very busy environments that provide one of the toughest tests for communications systems when it comes to dealing with noise and the complexities of ensuring consistent radio coverage in both open and closed areas. In particular, we believe that, once implemented, the new system will help MAHB to improve their customer experience even further, as well as increasing the safety of all staff,” commented Lim Keng Hockat, CEO of Comintel Sdn Bhd.

In addition to the critical aviation activities, the MAHB system will also be used for a high number of non-aviation oriented services to ensure the smooth and safe running of the multi-site operations.
