Innovation in Business Radio : Panorama Antennas win 2014 Gerald David Award

In a surprise decision which reflects the converging and dynamic nature of the radio industry, the radio industry’s highest honour goes this year not to a handset or base-station, but to an innovative antenna.

Panorama Antennas are this year’s winners of the prestigious FCS Gerald David Award for Innovation in Business Radio.

Panorama Antennas LGMM-7-27-24-58 antenna solution provides dual MiMo antenna functions for 4G/LTE and dual band WiFi together with an active GPS antenna in a single-hole installation. The compact housing provides the isolation and low correlation factors required for effective MiMo operation.

This enables an installer to carry out an effective antenna installation without the need to understand the specific technicalities of MiMo antennas, reduces the installation time — providing a cost reduction for the installation process whilst improving the vehicle residual value.

“The industry can rightly be amazed at the explosion in the use of new technologies that has arisen due to the application of digital information”, said chairman of the judges Paul Smye-Rumsby.  “So it might also be amazed that this year’s BR14 Gerald David Award goes to Panorama Antennas.

“One might be forgiven for reasoning that there ain’t much digital technology in antennas so what’s the award for?  The award is for innovation in business radio.  Lest we forget, the function of all this technology ain’t much good without antennas to carry our highly sophisticated emissions to their destination.  Well done Panorama.  You deserved it one hundred percent.”

Notes for editors

The FCS award is named in honour of the late Gerald David OBE, a tireless advocate of the business radio industry in the UK.  Its aim is both to recognise innovation within the business radio community and to flag up to the communications and IT industry as a whole that business radio is a vital, viable and progressive part of the mix.

Professor Jim Norton, former head of the Radiocommunications Agency, was a personal friend of Gerald David and shared some reminiscences with the audience before presenting the award.

The Awards presentation took place at the annual Business Radio Gala Dinner, which followed FCS Business Radio 14, the industry’s biggest ever one-day business summit.

Runners up of the Award were Motorola Solutions and Icom UK, more information on their applications can be requested from the FCS by emailing Louise Britchford on lbritchford@fcs.org.uk
