EADS demonstrates world’s first high speed data solution over TETRA
World’s first TETRA high speed data radio promises more than ten times faster data transmission at the TETRA World Congress in Madrid
High speed data capability can be introduced as a software upgrade
June 12, 2007 – EADS Secure Networks today transmitted high-speed data over its TETRA radio communication network – the first company in the world to do so. EADS has developed its high speed data capability based on the TETRA enhanced data service (TEDS) standard for mission critical Professional Mobile Radio networks. EADS’ solution integrates high-speed data capability seamlessly into the TETRA radio communication networks by EADS and can be introduced by a software upgrade.
The product concept proves that a two-way video transmission, for example, will be possible using a single TEDS carrier of 50-kHz channel bandwidth. In the beginning, EADS will support both 25-kHz and 50-kHz channel bandwidths. EADS’ TEDS radio works in existing EADS TETRA network infrastructure – no hardware has been upgraded in the TB3 base station.
“Being first to introduce mobile IP data over TETRA, the first vendor to develop JavaTM– enabled radio terminals, and now the first to demonstrate TETRA high speed data radio, highlight EADS’ leadership in Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) in general and TETRA data in particular”, said Jean-Marc Nasr, Head of EADS Secure Networks. “In 2004, we introduced the world’s first TEDS-ready TETRA base station. We promised to develop high-speed capability for existing EADS networks as a software upgrade. We are delivering on that promise now”.
High speed data can be made available throughout EADS networks as wide-area, wideband data service. EADS’ TEDS solution allows for always-on data services and provides sufficient capacity not only for high-speed data, but for simultaneous use of several narrow-band data applications.
TEDS can bring to life what has been completely out of reach with any narrowband TETRA 1 data service – including multi-slot packet data. This technology leap can be translated into benefits that users appreciate: for example, new data-centric ways of communication and operation can now be developed.
TEDS has been designed in a way that high-speed data services can be offered over the same wide-area coverage that TETRA networks have – using the same base stations and sites, the same core network, the same network management and service provisioning. TEDS can also be deployed within the same frequency allocations as existing TETRA in the 380- and 410-MHz frequency bands. This means that the same base station antennas can be used. Cost-efficient, multi-purpose voice and data terminals are therefore possible for all TETRA services, including high speed data.
EADS Secure Networks is a world leading provider of Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) that enables professional organizations to communicate together effectively, reliably, and securely. EADS is the only company worldwide that can offer specialized PMR solutions based on TETRA, TETRAPOL, and P25 technologies. EADS has already delivered more than 150 mission-critical PMR networks, over 30 of which with nationwide coverage.
EADS Secure Networks is part of Defence and Communications Systems (DCS), the “Systems House” of EADS, an integrated Business Unit of the EADS Defence & Security Division (DS). DS is a systems solutions provider combining military air systems, missile systems, communications and intelligence systems, global security solutions, sensor and avionics systems, as well as test and support solutions into a single effective network. In 2006, DS – with its around 23,000 employees – achieved revenues of 5.9 billion.
EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2006, EADS generated revenues of 39.4 billion and employs a workforce of about 116,000.
