EADS Defence & Security to deploy a TETRA network to the Philippines, covering one of the largest shipyards in the world

-Future-proof radio network to replace old analogue system
-EADS TETRA solution best-suited for the tough local conditions
-Modernization of communications among the workforce will improve efficiency of operations and ensure a better safety for all

11 December 2008– EADS Secure Networks (SN) Korea, an integrated activity of EADS Defence & Security (DS), is to deliver by the end of 2008 a complete TETRA network to the Subic shipyard in the Philippines.

SN will supply the solution together with Seoul Commtech Company (SCC), its trusted Korean partner.

The system will enter operations in January 2009. In the first phase, the network will be used primarily for voice communication, but it has also been designed to endure a heavy load of data traffic. Numerous value-adding applications are indeed planned to be integrated on this network over the years.

Huge shipyards are known for their very challenging environment for radio communications due to vast metal structures all over the yards, huge voice communication traffics and wide range of talk groups.

SN’s benchmark network in Geoje for a Korean shipyard operated by Samsung Heavy Industries has paved the way since 2004 for TETRA industrial use in these harsh conditions. The expertise of SN for ports also derives from the German Eurogate Container Terminal EUROKAI, in the Hamburg harbour, where a network provided by SN is covering an area of 800,000 m with a quayside of 2,570 metres. The site has been in operation since 1998. The French Port of Le Havre also deployed its own PMR system (supplied by SN) in 2002 covering an area of 60 square kilometres providing enhanced applications to the security services.

The rich experience of SN is thus clearly a key success factor for deploying this network in the Philippines in the weeks to come. This is also one of the main reasons for which SN has been selected. Besides, its customer was looking for a durable partner in order to enhance the network towards value-adding services such as stock management and reporting.

Dr. Seung Chae Park, president of EADS SN Korea declared “Together with SCC, we are proud to provide a worldwide-proven TETRA system to Subic. EADS TETRA systems and terminals are indeed widely used in industrial markets as well as in other markets such as public safety and security or transportation. We will now deploy in Subic the same endurance and resilience that has been successful in Beijing during the 2008 Games.”

EADS Secure Networks is a world leading provider of Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) and an integrated activity of EADS Defence & Security (DS). DS is a systems solutions provider for armed forces and civil security worldwide. Its portfolio ranges from sensors and secure networks through missiles to aircraft and UAVs as well as global security, service and support solutions. In 2007, DS – with around 22,000 employees – achieved revenues of 5.5 billion. EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2007, EADS generated revenues of 39.1 billion and employed a workforce of over 116,000.
