EADS Defence & Security chosen by Korea Electric Power Corporation for nationwide radio communications

22 May 2008

EADS Defence & Security (DS) will expand Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) TETRA network. KEPCO has awarded Nuri Telecom, EADS Secure Networks’ Value Added Reseller for PMR solutions, the project to set up an advanced digital radio communication network in South Korea. The implementation of the turnkey project is expanded on top of an already operational trial network, an EADS TETRA System delivered by Nuri Telecom.

The new radio communications network is replacing the existing analogue system, and it will be used for controlling and monitoring KEPCO’s power distribution and transformation network.

Nuri Telecom is the main contractor of this turnkey project, and EADS Secure Networks, an integrated activity of EADS DS, will provide the complete solution, including the EADS TETRA
system and radio terminals. The already operational trial network with its 13 TB3 base stations together with the now contracted 108 additional TB3 base stations will form a backbone network that covers the seven main regions of South Korea. The network operates on a 380-MHz frequency.

“The network will benefit from the most future-proof solutions,” states Mr SongMan Cho, CEO, Nuri Telecom. “The data radio is based on the newest innovations, and the network itself will be built to take advantage of Fortecor solutions for high speed data”.

“KEPCO’s energy supply service reaches everywhere in Korea. It’s essential to build up a truly seamless radio communications network that will surely lead KEPCO to achieve the efficiency and reliability of the Power IT applications such as Power Distribution Automation, Auto Meter Reading, Wind Speed Monitoring, and Quick Repair & Maintenance Mobile Service among others” says Mr. MyungJong Lee, Manager, KEPCO.

“The selection process including the trial was very thorough, and we are proud to have been selected,” says Jean-Marc Nasr, President, EADS Secure Networks. “KEPCO has its sights in the
future, and we are looking forward to working with them in building a system that suits their very specific needs. This is a very important case for EADS Secure Networks, further strengthening our position in the mission critical markets”.

EADS Secure Networks is an integrated activity of EADS Defence & Security (DS). DS is a systems solutions provider for armed forces and civil security worldwide. Its portfolio ranges from
sensors and secure networks through missiles to aircraft and UAVs as well as global security, service and support solutions. In 2007, DS – with around 22,000 employees – achieved revenues of 5.5 billion. EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2007, EADS generated revenues of 39.1 billion and employs a workforce of about 116,000.
